Existing data will be integrated into a comprehensive geological characterization of the subsurface at 17 Federal nuclear sites. Information (lithologic and electrical logs) from existing wells will be analyzed and integrated with regional geology to define the likely lithologic and depositional settings of potentially contaminated strata, and displayed by means of local cross-sections and contour maps. Where possible, interpretive predictions beyond the limits of hard data will be made and the most cost-effective approaches to problem-solving will be described. For each site, basic information (topography, geology, geophysics if available, climate, stratigraphy, geography) will be concisely displayed in maps and/or cross-sections, using consistent scales and base maps. An extensive annotated bibliography of published work and previous local studies will be designed to prevent duplication of effort in the future.

Sites to cover: Lawrence Livermore (CA), Hanford (WA), INEL (ID), Nevada Test Site (NV), Rocky Flats (CO), Los Alamos (NM), Sandia (NM), Pantex (TX), Kansas City Weapons Plant (MO), Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (KY), Fernald Feed Materials Center (OH), Mound Plant (OH), Ashtabula Plant (OH), Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (OH), Oak Ridge (TN), Savannah River (SC), Pinellas (FL).

Time and Approach: Location and acquisition of data from previous work is likely to be the most difficult and time consuming aspect of the work, and might entail travel to some sites. Estimated time for acquisition of data = 8 weeks. Once data and reports have been obtained, integration, interpretation, and display are estimated to require from one to three weeks per site (average, 2 weeks), for a total of 34 weeks. An additional 5 weeks is required for final report production. Total time: 47 working weeks (1 year). The final document would be a comprehensive report covering all areas, in separate chapters for each site.
