Current Activities of Gibson Consulting
(and What's New)

|| What's New Archive

2003-2004

Dick Gibson and Gibson Consulting have relocated to Butte, Montana. We are working on oil exploration projects in Nevada and elsewhere, and Dick is aggressively pursuing adult education directions. He serves as a study guide for Smithsonian Journeys in the US and Iceland, and is the volunteer Education Director at the World Museum of Mining. In addition, he is seeking support for the publication of a book of Montana's Geological Wonders, to be published by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology.

Dick travelled to Lafayette College, Easton, PA, where he served as an AAPG Visiting Geologist.

2001-2002

Dick Gibson is working one day a week as a volunteer geoscientist at the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, in Butte.

Gibson Consulting is working with Ken Skinner and Rich Pawlowicz on a project to generate gas plays in the Reelfoot Rift of Arkansas.

Gibson Consulting has moved its web site (due to a snafu by the previous provider) to the present location, hosted by Earthlink.

On-Line Grav-Mag Interpretations Planned

Gibson Consulting is planning an ambitious project to place substantially all of our proprietary, non-exclusive projects on the web for subscription-based access. The project will include the US Basement Tectonic Interpretation, the Former Soviet Union magnetic interpretation together with most of the spin-off products associated with that work, and new work based on publicly available data, including Satellite Gravity data. Gibson Consulting's joint work with Bird Geophysical on Southeast Asia gravity and magnetic projects may be available on-line only to owners of those studies. Gibson Consulting is also working on a web-based version of our successful Gravity and Magnetics Short Course, which would be part of this subscription service and would include electronic interaction with Dick Gibson over a specified period of time (several weeks). Additional small projects, such as our short report on Grav-Mag Expressions of Thrust Belts, will be included, along with new non-exclusive reports that we generate. All subscribers will enjoy electronic support of the interpretations from Dick Gibson (that is, if you have questions, he will attempt to deal with them at no additional cost).

The US Basement Tectonic Interpretation represents about 6 months of work, while the total FSU Package is about 15 man-months of work. Thus this is an extremely cost-effective way to obtain access to these comprehensive regional interpretation projects.

Bird Geophysical and Gibson Consulting continue their work on Southeast Asia gravity and magnetic projects. They entered into a marketing agreement with Alan B Reid PhD, Reid Geophysics(e-mail), to promote the studies in Europe, which Alan can handle readily from his base in London. This followed a successful poster presentation by Dale at the SEG convention in Houston in November, 1999.

Dick Gibson served as an AAPG Visiting Geologist at the Department of Geological Sciences of Indiana University, October 2-3, 2001. Chris Maples was host for this visit, which coincided with the meeting of the IU Department of Geological Sciences' Advisory Board, on which Dick serves.

Another AAPG VGP trip is planned for next winter/spring 2002, to Boise State University.

Dick gave a talk on "The Geologic Story of the Tobacco Root Mountains" to the Montana Wilderness Association, in November 2001 in Ennis, MT.

Dick has also been named webmaster for the "official" IUGFS web pages in Bloomington. Less formal information can be seen extensively at This Week at the IU Geologic Field Station. In addition, Dick is now also the webmaster for the IU Department of Geological Sciences web site.

If you have work-related questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Gibson Consulting is still in business.
